Biden’s predictable opening remarks in his announcement to run for President and his video clips to help reinforce his compassion for the tragedy in Charlottesville while strengthening his resolve to oust Trump from office is not the focus that will win the Presidency. Charlottesville and Trump’s racism is the zeitgeist that is etched in all those who have not harden their hearts. However that is not the primary issue for winning the Presidency.
Newsweek recently reported that many of the voters that supported Bernie in 2016 voted for Trump or did not vote at all. Why did they vote for Trump? Trump as well as Bernie represented an outsider that would be their voice against the establishment in Washington that has forgotten them (us). Trump’s base is not just the rabble at his rallies but many others — who are often embarrassed by his various stances and yet supportive of his policies.
Biden represents the old school liberal who doesn’t really understand personal boundaries and is sexist towards women in a subtle manner. Many men will not get this due to inculcated values inherent in our hierarchical society. His inability to understand why he needs to take responsibility and apologize to Anita Hill is troublesome at the very least and is not the mark of a good leader. He doesn’t understand the current climate of America.
As Jessica Valenti wrote — there is no going back “to normal”. The “normal” was a sham that current activism now hopefully erases. Biden is the “safe” candidate that has not fully focused on the needs of our experiment in democracy in comparison to the specific policies of Elizabeth Warren for example.
The bottom line issues are healthcare, the fairness of the economy (money issues), immigration and climate change.
