From the point of view of a shaman time doesn't exist at all. The so-called "past" are memories of the past that exist in the present (a fleeting one at best) and "the future" exists as extrapolations, expectations, assumptions and predictions in the illusory present.
Shamans don't use machines to "travel through time", though the illusion of travel can be nice. Shamans use consciousness in a kind of expansion to include. Work for a shaman exists outside of time in "a place" of no-time, sometimes.

This is a headache (my headache not yours) trying to use a finite based technology - of language to describe something outside of time.
