Gren entered the great hall of “The Country Tavern” and was bade welcome. Light from a gallery above shone on a crowd of loud, reveling young men and women. One young man, intoxicated, swaggered up to him. Tall and lanky, the fellow leaned into Gren’s side, knocking him into the lap of a large woman. There was laughter. In the cacophony, Gren slipped from her lap to the floor, and was kicked and spat upon. Some piled on him as he struggled to rise, but there were too many of them. Their blows rendered him unconscious.
