Dow disregarded the Diva’s warning by handing Gren over to his brother Rawl. When the two foremen conferred at the exchange point, Dow’s foreman told Rawl’s foreman of the Diva’s warning.

Rawl was more powerful than Dow. Older, he had amassed a great amount of wealth. There was a rivalry between the two.

On the way back Rawl released one of Gren’s restraints. Gren wriggled free and began to run. One of Rawl’s guards tackled him and bit into the thigh of Gren. He dropped. The guard kicked the thigh of screaming Gren until bloodied. He continued until Rawl gave the command to stop.
