No one could revive him. He remained where he had fallen.

“Where is Zol?” Timel demanded an answer from Zol’s son.

“You know that he went to find help weeks ago. He foresaw this,” Horace said. And in a whisper, “Or something far worse.”

“What could be worse than this?” Timel boomed. “No. Don’t answer.”

Horace remained silent.

Gren returned to consciousness. “Where am I?” He spoke as if in a trance. Breathing was difficult in the thick grey air as if darkness had weight.

Seven Days Before Gren’s Arrival
