After raucous laughter had seized him, he felt grand. Two steps away from the soft, wet ground, he slipped, fell, and slid to the edge of a nearby brook. All the pain from the fall to the bottom of the well returned with a vengeance.

He strained against the impenetrable wall of pain, searching for memory as if he were dying.

“Am I dead?” he asked aloud.

Earth answered: You are alive. You are you.

He moved up to a wall of pain and passed out.
