Zol sat by the sea with his son, grandsons, and daughter-in-law, gazing into a tide pool. Zol’s relations waited a long time to hear what he was seeing.
Green walked to the east, sun setting at his back. The squat mounds of ground cover gave way to arid lumps of earth with water-starved plants. Absent-minded, he scratched his head periodically. Twigs, lichen, and tiny seeds fell from his scalp and hair.
Twilight came and went as the landscape flattened. Plants were absent for a time. Stars lit the dome of the heavens. His feet carried him forward. His nostrils detected a scent of water ahead. His body was excited for water, but his emotions — hesitant, fearful. His mind balked, forcing a full stop.
