Green, carried helplessly by the swollen current along the ancient river bed. His legs did not respond to his will, and he struggled to keep afloat. He was delirious in the effort to keep from drowning. The flow carried him far beyond where any water had gone before.

He floated on his arched back when the sun broke through the low-hanging clouds. To the northwest, sand along the banks of the river fell into the water, exposing rocks. To the south and east was an endless horizon of water.
