Hope in the modern age arises from fear, at least a friend of mine following Buddhist teachings has told me. While I suspect this to be true - hope takes us out of the present moment. The only kind of fear that doesn't lead to hope is an immediate fear of a bodily threat - like a car that doesn't stop for a red light and I'm in the crosswalk. That might be the exception.

There is an Arab Proverb - Hope for a good day, but prepare yourself for a bad one.

On the other hand I've been working under the rubric of remaining neutral regarding an ego attached "future" - this has been a practice of mine for the last ten years. Besides - again from a Buddhist perspective and the esoteric parts of religions - there is no future and no past - just an expanded present moment.
