I read this great book in my 20s by S.I. Hayakawa - "Language in Thought and Action". It describes and elaborates on how language shapes how we think of ourselves. And how the concept of self is shaped.
Having studied Psycho-Neurophysiology as an undergraduate I can attest that our brains are nothing like a computer. A growing number of neurologists have written same. It's not as simple as just re-programming or neocortex though that is a good start.
