I feel so disheartened by all this hatred, polarization, and violence.

As I see it there can be two solutions one immediate, one longer-term. Short term solutions could include tolerance training for police and much better training in conflict resolution.

Longer term solutions IMO require an emotional and cognitive approach to the root causes of racism, fear/anger/rage vented through scapegoating. My sense is that everybody wants the same thing regarding emotional needs. They are feelings of:

safety, belonging and peace. Many people who are both educated and uneducated express their feelings for safety, belonging and peace through the filters of fears manifesting as righteousness, rage, prejudice, bigotry and blaming the other.

The current political polarization has given voice to the racist majority as victims forcing them into toxic fear/rage acting-out cycles.

I feel I can practice compassionate tolerance with my sister who has shown she is a racist, a fierce supporter of Trump and very bigoted. Its disheartening at the very least. The best approach with her has been to ask questions. This has had very limited success.

I think a grassroots coalition of compassionate peoples are needed for a dialog to start without throwing blame on the other from either side.
