I grew up under terrorist rule - that was the undercurrent even though I am a white male born into a small amount of privilege (larger considering everyone in the US). I lived in a white insular community growing up. My father constantly was threatening violence because he lived in fear. Though to show fear in his mind was weakness so he raged at everything including my mother, sister and me. I was the "weak" scapegoat.

My mother buckled under his rule - too wounded to divorce, she felt trapped and I'm convinced that the development of dementia was her way out.

My sister was much more terrified of our father than I was and she adopted his rage as a defense against her vulnerablities and the truth.

I became a lefty, though according to the norms of the late 60s early 70s I was a Democrat, back then. Now Democrats of that time period have been reshaped and propagandized as Left Wing Communists etc.
