My father praised one story story I wrote in 6th grade - it launched my idea that I could be a writer. But other than that he never praised me or apologized when he was mistaken. He only grunted. It was probably PTSD from WWII and he was a big baby and had to have everything his way or it was fisticuffs time.

At least you praised your kids. So I can relate to your son's distancing routine...
