I learned this lesson in my 20s except in my healing practice. I learned it - painfully because I had a client who paid me gobs of money. But she only took the advice she wanted from me. It nearly killed me (and her)- her not taking my advice - literally. Lesson learned the hard way - that was 6 years ago.
