I realized there was a “Great Depression” gathering increasing momentum in the late 80s, saw many of these disparities that you write about Umair with precision and eloquence. I came of age in the mid 70s so that by 1981 I knew that there was something seriously wrong with America; that social, economic, racial, gendered, and environmental justice was backwards and I chose to be on the team to “turn it right-side up” even if that meant never seeing results in my lifetime. It wasn’t until 1990 that I found my calling and surrendered to it becoming a small part of the larger team.

Now I realize that our species is likely to go extinct due to greed, capitalism, an impotent democracy (replaced by an oligarchy / dictatorship) and a truncated quarterly earning report /shortsightedness. There is a slim chance that by acting now, within this year we may save a little less than a billion humans out of estimated 10 billion in the population peak. I feel heartbroken that the status quo can’t or wont see that cooperation and radical change is needed in all levels of life to save all of us in the remaining billion. I hope to be wrong.
