I saw 2001 in 1969 at a Cinerama Theater in Connecticut with my Father, then with my art class, social studies class and English Class all in Cinerama, After that I've seen it upwards of 100 times in theaters.
The print that is in circulation currently has a cut in in of the apes' first awareness of the monolith - that builds suspense much in the same way that Wim Wenders did in "Wings of Desire". European films were different.
Now films are about the quick cut for the most part. In 2001 the original print was over 3 hours long. I never saw that print, and the 1968 full print is not available anywhere that I'm aware of it. And it's a shame. The shrinking of language and the attention span of modern humans. Alas.
