I think it depends on age. I was 27 in 1978 when I first saw it on public television.
In the boomer generation, fathers having returned from WWII had it tough. The film reflects the hardness of life that my parents were used to due to the Great Depression. To see a man of faith - George Bailey as a good man overcome hardship was incredibly inspiring and the community rally around him.
This made it a beloved film.
