I used to edit film and video before the digital age. And though it's vastly different from editing a body of work as in writing there is a single-minded focus that belongs to each discipline.

Now, I edit using two tools. Grammarly and the Hemingway App. I find myself yelling at the Grammarly App because I disagree with the algorithm. The Hemingway App is good at pointing out too many uses of passive voice, adverbs, complex sentences in two modes. It can be tedious at times. The one thing I love about the Hemingway App is a one time fee of $20.

Grammarly is good for punctuation -Oxford style, but word choice - ugh and combining sentences are sometime infuriating - thus the yelling (and laughing too).

When I read fiction I see many writers spend too much time explaining things rather than letting action or dialog carry the story. Narrative non-fiction should pair down exposition.

When I edited video my obsessive compulsive features of perfectionism would take over. When I was finished I had to go for a run or scream at the sky. So editing other peoples works is not for me.
