I worked in public mental health as a crisis counselor in two facilities for 19 years. And have done my share of interventions.
That being said - the personal growth movement - coupled with detachment issues fomented by tech and the internet have made many into passive observers. Part of the problem is a false belief that you have to compete your training in self-esteem or fill-in the blank. If I had done that while working people would have died by suicide in front of me.
Life and personal growth occurs as part of our experience in a social context. We will never be completed (via personal growth) its a work in progress. Hands-on actions are part of the learning curve.
I am reminded of Chancey Gardener of "Being There", Peter Sellers as Chance played a simpleton who said, "I like to watch." (he was referring to televisions) This is where we are headed based on the inactions of the people on the train. Isn't it?
