If it's paid off is the obvious answer, but what about the shadow issue. Does the car own you?

In California, many of the things we do involves long distances especially if your live in the 'burbs. And there's no mass transit connections.

I was recently without a car, kind of suicide if you live where I do. And I was contemplating a life without a car. I now have one, used and paid for. But I am owned by and a slave to my car as much as I "own" it.

And that doesn't include the carbon footprint.
