My understanding, having worked in mental health for over 20 years that "psychopath" and the "sociopath" were eliminated with the DSM III or IV and replaced with Anti-Social Personality D/O.
Having attempted to work with those labelled Narcissistic Personality D/O have characteristics of sociopaths and psychopaths in the common terminology, they are highly resistant or impervious to help/treatment. I worked Crisis Intervention on a residential level- short-term treatment. Most of them never were allowed back to our program because they exhibited highly manipulative behaviors and were predatory with some other clients with poor boundaries and low self-esteem. Most of the staff were repelled by these men (there was only one woman who was a narcissist).
They sent me in to work with them due to my love of challenges. However I repeatedly failed to help them, due to their avoidance etc. and manipulative word play/behaviors. In the end they admitted to not needing any help despite blunt reality testing from me.
