Past lives or memories of past lives? Or both?

In my work the people that reincarnate rarely remember their previous lives. Some very old souls - that are referred to as the immortals remember their past lives in great detail - the Dali Lama being one. Since memory is a function of time past lives could be memories of past lives that matche wounded themes in this life. It may be easier for people with a memory of a past life that they didn't live to resolve similar themes in the current life because attachment may be less.
