Sharp cheddar - off-white cheese is the sharpest of the cheddars available in any market in Connecticut and Massachusetts. (probably true in Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine), I grew up in Connecticut and went to college in Worcester, MA.)

Most supermarkets like Safeway didn't carry Vermont Sharpe Cheddar cheese. Although now that I'm lactose intolerant I'm sure they do - its the fu-foo thang to do.

My Ma made great apple pie and we'd sit down to supper and for dessert Homemade Apple Pie with a small wedge of Sharpe (ouch) Vermont Chedda Cheese - variations on the New England accent.
