There's nothing wrong with stepping or falling into an abyss. There is a distinct difference between the void and an abyss. The void - nothing exists not even the self. An abyss is the lowest spot in one's life. There are might lessons to learn from an abyss.

The void is a cleanse of ego. The times I have gone to the void (I know, I know - an ultimate contradiction) I do not remember that I was there until I return. Modern peoples equate ego with egoism - ego is another name for the self - which is an illusory platform to view the world. The void strips out the self. I have felt clean after returning from the void. The only danger is weeks or months of catatonia after returning from the void.
