When I began meditating in 1975, I was not concerned with lowering stress, anxiety, or alleviating symptoms of depression.
My primary aim was then, and is now to explore. Lowering stress and feeling peace is a side benefit one to which I do not expect. Expectation is the killer of present and future experiences.
In explorations of states to cut myself off from all outside stimuli I have utilized a Native American ritual known as "going to the void". It is a dangerous technique because it can lead to a catatonic state that may last hours or months.
