In the states (US) Armistice Day was changed in 1954 (Wikipedia source) to Veterans Day. The meaning creates a vast chasm to intent. Laying down of arms is a gesture towards peace whereas Veterans are honored because they fight for a nation against another nation.

To me Armistice Day is remembering when fighting ceased, honoring those that fought on either side, collective grief and peace.
