“I do not remember you, sir,” Green spoke. His voice broke into guttural sounds. And he fell asleep within the beam of the boat.
The journey toward the shore was a long one. Green’s sleep was fitful. He awoke shivering and feverish. They made landfall on the marshy shore before dawn in the dark.
Men and women carried Green into the white tent with a warm fire. They stripped off his wet clothing and wrapped him in white flannel. He tossed and turned with fever.
In the early light, he woke. The fever had broken, but his throat was tight and sore. All the men and his rescuer were dead asleep in the white billowy tent. He re-wrapped the flannel cloth around himself and stepped into the fresh morning air.
