He worked his way among cathedral boulders onto a steeper incline: the rock face.
Gren’s muscles strained against the climb. He enjoyed the stretch as his nimble mind met the mountain and he rose toward its ascent. The terrain grew more steep and rocky. He crossed fields of stones the size of his head. Walking slow and arduous he inched forward. The travail hazardous, even with the help of the crystalline staff. The air grew thin. Exhausted. Exhilarated. Out of breath — he halted. Exhilarated upon clearing the field of stones. He emerged into a sea of alpine ground cover. Large, low flat rocks flush with the ground appeared as islands in a sea of green mosses and small plants. He leapt from rock to rock with a laugh. Climbed higher into a clearing. He ate the last of his scant food and savored the taste.
