Gren and Timel lay unconscious in a heap on the earthen floor of a stable.
After a time Gren cracked an eye open — a slit to assess the situation.
One of two giant guards — one with broader shoulders — sat under a lantern’s dim light. He leaned forward from his high chair and stared at Gren. Gren heard his gruff voice in his head: Better not try anything stupid.
The dusky dawn sent gauze fingers of light into the stable. The other guard joined the first. Together they hauled Gren and Timel into the deeper recesses of the stable.
Later their heads wedged into a trough with dripping nozzles a breath away from their lips.
